Laughing [uncomfortably] at analog grandma

October 23 2008

Today a friend linked me to a hilarious video about a senior citizen trying to get ready for the conversion of all TVs to HDTV/digital in 2009.  As I watched, I thought of my parents who got their first computer last year and still struggle to do what I consider to be the simplest things.  Mom suffers from “wild mouse” syndrome, which makes doing anything on a computer difficult.

But as I thought about my laughter at grandma, I remembered my own somewhat awkward experience the last 3 years at Pod Camp Pittsburgh.  While I wasn’t the only Boomer in the audience–maybe 30% were, to my surprise–the whole show was about the newest generation of social media artists.

So I struggled to bring something back that was useful and that I could apply.  Several of that next generation were very patient and supportive last Saturday and in the past.  One even helped me set up this site.

This blog is part of what I’ve brought back from Pod Camp–a first effort at getting on the blog train.  Also, as a result I’ve now registered my blog at Pittsburgh Bloggers and started using Tags and Categories.  I don’t really understand the relationship yet between these and Key Words, Meta Keywords, Page Titles, etc. that search engines like.

But, I’m gradually picking up some momentum.  Kind of like an analog locomotive, not a bullet train.

Lets be kind across the generation and analog-digital gaps. There’s something in the internet and social media for all of us and we all have something to offer.

Nice to know you’re catching up with more stuff. I’d also recommend adding a wiki or a forum, where your regular visitors can start posting discussions about various things. It may be the details of their current problems, evolution of a new marketing style, a new marketing channel, etc.

Great job with the posting so far.

Glad to see you’re continuously learning. The key is to get more digital each day and not wait for Jack Benny to come back. PittGirl is in her seventies, and look at her blog!

Thanks to both of you for offering support for this new blogging venture. Saurabh, while your ideas sound intriguing, I wish I understood better what you’re suggesting. Maybe you could explain more?

And I suspect that if I move in the suggested directions, I’ll need help from my Pittsburgh social media guru, John Carman. He very patiently helped me get started last year by creating the framework for this site… and has coached me through some minor crises and confusions since then.

John, “get out of town” that PittGirl is that old! Pretty savvy and outrageous lady. “Upity” even, as my brilliant cousin in Boston says. Plus, I hadn’t heard the rumor that Jack Benny was coming back. With Elvis?
